The Policy Internship will be a capstone experience for students in this program. Students will spend one semester (4 months) at an agency or institution where they will focus on a policy issue that is relevant to their research. Students will receive financial support during this time as part of the NSF funding.

Potential host agencies include (but are not limited too):

  • The Park Service
  • The Plant Nutrition Institute
  • EPA Region 10
  • The National Resource Conservation Service
  • The National Center for Atmospheric Research

Opportunities for International experience are also possible with agencies in Canada, Mexico and elsewhere:

  • Environment Canada
  • BIO (an international consortium of agricultural biotechnology groups

To integrate this policy experience with their research, each student will include a chapter in their dissertation that incorporates aspects of their internship experience and the policy features most closely related to their scientific research.
